人生の庭 Jinsei no niwa

Designing a language independent physical interactive book.

A neutral language visual book

This book has been realized at the Department of Design – Kyoto City University of Arts under the supervision of professor Ichiro Funakoshi

Jinsei no niwa (garden of life) is inspired to Romano Battaglia’s quote: “Men’s destinies are like rivers, some flow rapidly with no uncertainty, on easy paths. Others pass through thousand troubles but anyway go to the see eventually. The final destination is the same for all.”

The project has been displayed at the exchange students’ final exhibition at Kyoto City University of Arts

Unfold your personal journey of life

The book, can be unfolded in six different ways by making choices while opening it. This book is a unique piece laser-printed on Japanese ‘washi’ (rice paper) and the illustrations are inspired from traditional Japanese gardens which are massively present in the culture, especially in the city of Kyoto. The pictures below illustrate the way Ako, Kae and Misako decided to unfold the book creating their own journeys through life. While unfolding the book, the illustrations move the representation of the garden (zenith view) from a spring mood to a the winter conveying the idea of the seasons of life.
